These tools have the mass and stability needed for mortise work. The 30° primary bevel combines with the heavy cross-section to stand up to constant levering action. The sides are carefully ground parallel with each other and precisely on dimension. Whether you're chopping mortises or squaring up the round ends of machine cut mortises, these chisels are built for the task. Each tool will have its date of manufacture machined into the stainless steel butt cap.
Our sister-company, Blue Spruce Toolworks, began the quest for the ideal chisel blade in 2005. In 2019 they invested in grinding and polishing equipment that delivers the flattest, smoothest surface possible. The back of each chisel has been ground and polished to a flatness measured in "light-bands". Imagine buying new chisels and not spending countless hours attempting to flatten the backs by hand.
Nor will you spend any time on initial sharpening. The dedicated tool finishers at Blue Spruce understand sharpening at a different level than most of us. They use skill, technique and specialized equipment to shape the 30° primary bevel and bring the 5° micro-bevel to a surgically sharp edge. The double-tempered and cryogenically treated A-2 tool steel blades hold their edge like nothing else on the market. You simply cannot find a better chisel blade…anywhere.
Over the next 4 years Woodpeckers will release a full range of Bench, Dovetail, Paring, Mortise and Butt Chisels…40 in all. Each release will have a 4-week window for you to place your order. Like all Woodpeckers products, the Mortise Chisel Sets are precisely machined and carefully inspected right here in our Strongsville, Ohio, facility just south of Cleveland. You can order through Monday, August 3, 2026. Delivery expected September 2026.
